Macedonia is a little-known country just north of Greece, and it is the origin place of the Greek conqueror Alexander the Great. While I was in the region, I decided to drive up to Prilep (the fourth major city in Macedonia) for a short three-day trip. I had a good travel insurance for my trip, so no worries about traveling around; so here’s my itinerary.
Day 1
I arrive in Prilep after a few hours of driving from Greece. It’s not as far as I thought, being from Canada the distances between places are quite large, but in Europe everything is so compact. I sign in at the Kristal Palas, the most luxurious (and safest) hotel in Prilep. The location is perfect (a mere 10 minute walk from the city center), the rooms are clean and the service is prompt and friendly. As I am hungry, I take a quick shower and head down to the restaurant. A simple menu, with a touch of the local food. I love to taste local food, so I wasn’t disappointed.
Prilep

The city isn’t the safest at night, so I decide to take a short walk around the hotel neighbourhood before the sun sets. The architecture is simply stunning; a fascinating mix of the very old and the very new. Ancient 12th century churches battle for space with modern office buildings. Tired from my day of driving, I head back to my room and fall asleep instantly–I don’t understand Greek very well, so I can’t watch TV.

Several years of tradition have marked Prilep as a city of Beer. Everything started as a small idea in 2003, but ended as brilliant. There were countable small stands of beer from the local breweries and outside, and a very few grill stands. Local bands had a role to entertain the visitors. Three amazing days spent in dancing, drinking beer and eating grill had seemed to be more than good for the citizens of Prilep, so they decided to make this “experimental” festival its tradition. Today, people live for these three-four days of beer, and talk about them over the whole year. The festival has become famous not only in the Republic of Macedonia, but also abroad. It takes place in the middle of the summer. The Beer Fest is located in the centre of the city, on the city square.

What can I say about the nightlife in our tobacco city – Prilep? I, as a young citizen of Prilep can say that there is a nightlife which can sometimes be very interesting, exciting and full of fun, entertainment, laughter and positive energy, but also sometimes can be boring, monotonous and banal like I would say, in every other city in the world. Why? Because I strongly believe that we, the citizens of every city, in this case Prilep, create our own nightlife just like our everyday life. We chose the places to go to, the people to hang out with and the things to do, in other words everything.

The monument sculptured by nature, Marko’s Towers is located on the north of the city of Prilep. On its three sides, it is surrounded by the mountain Babuna, and only on the west side by the Prilep field. Forgiveness is an interesting mix of pagan masks and sounds, drums and creative individual masks. The atmosphere could feel only those who are present that day in Prilep. That day is filled with happiness, hanging out, creativity and friendship with the unknown. The adrenaline can bring you to the sky that day; because of the masks representing criticism, joy, displeasure, pleasure etc.
On the occasion of the Christian holiday of Forgiveness, Prilep, every year on Sunday holds a carnival under masks.
